Show Notes

0:00: With two big topics to discuss, Justin and Helen dive right into all the news that happened in the past two weeks, starting with breaks for mostly health reasons, except possibly for one of them.

Licenses

2:48: Seven Seas once again had Wonderful Wednesday announcements:

  • Nagisa Furuya’s Only the Stars Know (Boys’ Love)
  • Kiyoko Iwami’s My Girlfriend’s Not Here Today (Girls’ Love)
  • Mei Hachimoku & KUKKA’s The Mimosa Confessions (Airship)
  • JP & Kim Byung Kwan’s Reborn Rich (Webtoon Manhwa)
  • Ken Homerun’s Marriage to Kitsune-sama (Boys’ Love)
  • Eiko Mutsuhana, Gin Shirakawa, & Yugiri Aika’s Re-Living My Life with a Boyfriend Who Doesn’t Remember Me manga
  • PANDANIA’s Monster Cats

Then they had a NOT Wonderful Wednesday announcement out of nowhere – they licensed Scarlet Beriko’s Nagahama to Be, or Not to Be; the BL manga will have a special simultaneous release in 11 territories February 1, 2024, with a planned volume release in print April 2024

7:07: Kodansha then had their usual digital licenses for the upcoming month:

  • Kumagae & Hishiwo Miyazawa’s That Time the Manga Editor Started a New Life in the Countryside
  • Satoshi Morie’s Searching for My Perfect Brother
  • Chicchi Yukinaga & Nadainishi’s Rocopon

9:26: If you’re using K MANGA and are in the US, you can officially read Hajime no Ippo! Justin and Helen talk about this pretty significant news.

12:54: Dark Horse announced exclusively on ANN they’ve licensed Kenji Tsuruta’s Captain Momo’s Secret Base; meanwhile, Titan Manga also had an exclusive announcement on ANN of Shinta Harekawa’s Three Exorcism Siblings.

Streaming News

14:10: Black Jack 21, Monsuno, Treasure Island have been added to Tubi TV, so you can watch those shows now.

Main Topic #1: The End of Rightstuf

14:58: Welp, last year Crunchyroll purchased Right Stuf and the two hosts discussed this and Crunchyroll possibly ending Right Stuf in the near future. Then last episode, Helen became extremely concerned once the Got Anime! membership was being paused, and not that much long after, the announcement came that Right Stuf would be phased out, so now that catalog and Right Stuf’s operations in Iowa will now be part of the Crunchyroll store.

Needless to say, for those in North America, this is not surprising (except to Justin) news if you’re believing Sony just wants to monopolize most things, but overall it’s very disappointing. The two discuss what this means overall, how things will change (either in the short term but especially long term), and how the industry at large, especially those who are selling live-action works, will be affected by this news.

Main Topic #2: Final Summer Anime 2023 Impressions

39:49: The two hosts then finally discuss the summer anime season, where two hosts have two totally different favorite anime shows of the season, and also they both differ on how much anime one can watch in a season (nine apparently is too much). Both of the two hosts largely ignore the continuing shows (like Jujutsu Kaisen S2) and shows delayed for production issues (Zom 100).

Justin does talk about a show that did start in Spring and ended in Summer though in Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts.

Weird News

1:30:40: Over the past few weeks Jujutsu Kaisen manga fans have gone through the proverbial winger due to leaks and what’s been happening in the series now, and for those attempting to avoid those spoilers, Duolingo being the one to spoil a leaked chapter is beyond what anyone could’ve expected.

1:33:05: MANGA Plus did it. They tried to foist AI lettering onto their userbase, and literally in one day, they were caught in 4K, red-handed, etc. They then fixed up Rugby Rumble (specifically Mei Amaki, who also translated the manga, fixed up the manga) on Saturday. Needless to say, both hosts had much to say about that.

1:37:11: The news of GTO: Live-Action TV Special returning in Spring 2024 is a bit tempered by the fact that the author now has questions regarding how his current version of Onizuka is being handled by Kodansha.

1:38:43: Paru Itagaki got married, but naturally, the wedding was pretty unique.

1:39:27: Haruhi Suzumiya’s back!…But not how you’d think!

1:40:31: With YOASOBI and Oshi no Ko being a big thing this past year, let’s just say America’s Got Talent watchers got to learn all about that from a 19-member Japanese dance team!

1:41:33: Finally, just in time for Halloween, you can indeed just dress as Yor and Anya for your party or at the Halloween Parade. Thank you Fashion brand Peach John!
