There are definitely jokes that can be had with a premise as simple and baffling as The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses — but in the first volume, it was kind of dry. So the big thing with this second volume is whether or not the humor that could be had with this premise can be better.

Well, Chapter 17 introduces the classic case of a crush delivering a love letter, which Mie ends up finding just lying on the ground. She then picks it up. You can now cue an actual novel twist of any work involving school students and love letters from this point on!

On the whole this isn’t a huge quality jump from volume 1, but volume 2’s humor is much more on point, which is a good thing since so far this series is very much relying on readers to enjoy Mie and Komura’s innocuous interactions. We get very few new characters to shake things up, and the ones that do show up briefly or to add to the hilariousness involving the two. See Exhibit A, the not love letter Mie delivered to the hot kid in class, Azuma, who apparently has an idea about who Koumei likes and Koumei’s just baffled as to why and how he knows. Then you have Exhibit B, Someya, who puts Mie’s glasses on to Komura, which gives this kid dizziness due to the strength of those lens — and leads to a kabedon situation. Mie’s right there, but not like she can tell what’s happening aside from two lovers about to go at it in public — and then Someya mentions Koumei’s name and Mie moves to break the two up at the speed of sound.

More or less this volume is Mie coming to terms with also liking Komura, but not entirely sure about it either. The two are basically in the friendship phase of their relationship since so far they’ve only known each other due to class seating and Mie always forgetting her glasses, at this point, Koumei’s already in love with her but is still nowhere near ready to say it. Mie however hasn’t realized it yet, but from the usual history of these romance manga, they will have a relationship at some point. It’ll just be a question of how long will it take for this to happen.

Until then, this manga will have to continue developing these characters alongside its humor. As mentioned earlier that aspect improved, but it’ll need to not only get better but also maintain its consistency. While you’ll find some chapters better than others, we’ll still get the chapter where Mie forgets her glasses except its on her head and some really short chapters that kind of mess with the pacing of the volume. There is entertainment that can be had, though. Whether it continues to still rely on Mie somehow always forgetting her glasses for most of the volume remains a tough sell. So volume 3 will have to raise the quality factor, maybe with something that would be a shock to both (meeting either person’s parents somehow? Brother/Sister out of nowhere? No school festival yet though!)? Will have to see.
