Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle Volume 3

While the hero valiantly struggles to save the princess, while the nation of Goodereste continues to lament the princess’ safety, and while the demons continue to create their evil schemes, Syalis decides she needs to make a Ko-tatsu immediately.

…She ain’t heading back home anytime soon.

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle volume 3 continues giving helpful DIY tips if you’re ever stuck in a demon castle, where Syalis tries to find the best way to sleep, somehow. This time, while we have a situation where she wants to build a Ko-tatsu, we also get a story where she wants to have a window, another where she wants the most expensive hi-tech sleeping bed ever (and she’ll cheat her way in bingo to get it), and one where she wants a Queen-size bed.

This volume of course mixes it up though. It decides it wants to bring the holidays to the manga, and that means it’s Christmas time!…Let’s just say Syalis has high expectations for her present from Santa despite being captive in a demon castle. And if you thought her Christmas was rough, then just wait until what happens after New Year’s…

The stories in this volume are more amusing than actually laugh out loud this time, which is a little disappointing. The magic of the series hasn’t worn off as it manages to continue referencing other works and being creative with its setups, but it’s hard to really live up to the first two volumes, so in that respect, it’s unfortunate.

That doesn’t mean this volume is a slouch though. It once again helps that the designs in this manga are appealing to look at. From Syalis’ expressions to the horror the demons have whenever she does something to them (or “threatens” to), it’s pleasing to look at.

There’s also one chapter in this manga that does the following:

  • Takes the usual shonen underwear trope
  • Has Syalis want to knit woolen undies
  • And she makes sure not to tell the demons this because she’s not supposed to.

This leads to a situation where the demons managed to misinterpret her intentions because she’s been so vicious to them, and it ends with the craziest theory possible. Just from wanting to knit wool undies. Far, far too hilarious, and the more you think about it, it’s at least a good spin on what harem anime do, just complete with Syalis’ desire to sleep at every point.

No really, she sleeps in almost every way possible in this one. She sleeps normally. She sleeps at the Ko-tatsu. She sleeps outside in a sleeping bag. She sleeps as a cat.

…Yes, she really sleeps as a cat. How that happened, you’ll have to read to find out, and enjoy laughing along the way.
