Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense. Volume 4 manga

The second event begins to wind down, which means the end of Sally’s PKing and Maple’s training of the two cute creatures while making sure no one shows up by using poison. Well, sure, that ended, but the rumors of Maple’s brokenness continue to persist online, and now her friend Sally also is being talked about as well! But for these two, it’s all about having fun and doing what they want, and we’ll just have to follow these two as they continue playing New World Online!

What was fun, aside from the usual Maple antics that will be mentioned later, was the two going back to reality once the event ended. You’d think Maple would be able to adjust going back to school and settle in, but no, she has gamer brain. That gaming brain where she yelled her move in public for her fellow classmates to hear, and her doing it again during a dodgeball game — which resulted in her getting hit in the face — is embarrassing and perfectly Maple. Bet that taught her a lesson to game so much!

When she does go back to NWO though, some things have changed: a new event is going on, and she needs to buy a home. Thankfully, Sally’s there to help, and once they find their new place, it’s time to form a guild! Yep, the beginning of Maple Tree is in this volume, which means only irregulars and Maple are allowed! Well, at one point they had a chart on who was normal and who was freaky in the guild, so it’s not a public requirement that her members are weird, but that’ll be the expectation.

But otherwise, the continuing escapades of Maple doing one thing (taking on a quest that soon evolves into 4 other quests) then solving that one thing by doing everything “wrong” (using her giant turtle to complete one of the quests, which you’d never know she did if you looked at the NPC character that had to come with her) and then getting a skill that only she could make work (how can psychokinesis work like that!, the developers ask themselves) still remain hilarious. From her mindset to the cutesy expressions, it’s just very fun. You then involve her guildmates wondering what weird thing Maple will do next, and you get a moment where three of them send her messages at the same time during an event to make sure she does nothing weird.

But despite the weirdness, all of it makes Maple even more absurd than she already is, just in a cute way. She’s OP and produces wool that her guildmates have to shear off her. That’s gotta be what you want guildmates to do right?! And even the way she eats the secret boss after she was swallowed up by it was adorable too. I bet the developers had fun seeing their plans be munched on like that!

…We’ll have two new characters show up soon, so they’ll also get to enjoy Maple’s weirdness up close!
