A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! Volume 3

Last time we saw this awful, sailor uniform deprived teacher, Haruaki (Seimei) had to deal with his overprotective brother. In A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School! volume 3, this time, he has to deal with sports day. Sports days in general are not a bad thing…except at this school it is: the teacher who finishes in last place loses their salary (or for some, their cheese). This means between that and his general bad luck, Seimei is concerned. What will he do to have his class succeed? Let’s just say he’s gonna play a part…personally.

Sports day just about dominates volume 3, which ranges from this teacher is screwed to these students are screwed. They basically have to do the dumbest of things (find a legendary mythical weapon, for example) in addition to doing the usual events of running, climbing, etc. It was actually funny at times. But this volume shows two things:

  1. How the class is dealing with their human teacher with anti-yokai powers.
  2. How A Terrified Teacher in Ghoul School! is finding its groove.

It hints at some type of story regarding Seimei’s powers, but, overall, it’s gonna maintain its comedic tone. From the facial expressions to the amount of times the human teacher gets beat up over his sailor uniform fetishes (which, by the way, backfires in a huge way), Mai Tanaka’s making it clear where the manga is going to go. The other story in this volume, involving Seimei getting interviewed by a cute butterfly and an intimidating AD, basically covers points 1 & 2, and it’ll be odd if the series does a 180 as it continues. I think it’s finally settled into its groove. You can either accept that or move on.

I can accept it as long as it stays hilarious, which this volume was. The only thing that continues to be an issue is the characters. There does seem to be a focus on a certain amount of characters, but there’s no real standout among them for me. The headliner is Seimei, but these characters don’t stand out to me at all. There are maybe a few I enjoy, but really, it’s just me enjoying the odd situations they put their teacher in. I can only hope the amount of jokes in the manga continue to push that aspect aside, but I do want to have a character I can genuinely enjoy.
