Show Notes

Main Topic: COVID-19

0:00: Last episode Justin and Helen discussed what was happening as the coronavirus (COVID-19) emerged as a growing pandemic across the globe. Since then, it’s been something that has forced everyone to quickly adjust how life will go on for the next few weeks or months. The two hosts briefly discuss the global impact this has and will have before getting into how the anime and manga industries will be affected by this.

Note: Not too long after this episode was recorded that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (discussed at 3:20) is postponed to 2021.

14:40: Justin and Helen discuss what they’ve gotten up to over the past couple weeks. For Justin, that was going to watch Tokyo Godfathers in theaters…both the sub and dub versions! For Helen, she talks about watching Michiko and Hatchin and watching Last Hope with a friend. That might be the only way she’ll finish that show.

News

21:20: Tite Kubo is back! After years of rumors and much begging from the fans, Bleach will finally finish up, which means Justin can finally find out just how bad the arc actually was in animated form. Also in Tite Kubo news, his one-shot Burn the Witch is getting a full serialization and film adaptation.

And they’re releasing Blade of the Immortal as a deluxe edition.

29:34: New publishers are joining the industry! The two new publishers are Kaiten Books and Ablaze, and the two hosts briefly discuss this news and the manga they’re bringing over. Krystallina took a look at the two companies this past week.

Streaming News

35:31: Some anime streaming news: HIDIVE will add Aragne: The Sign of Vermillion & Kaiju Girls Black film; Funimation has added more Nozomi films titles; and Netflix will finally add Drifting Dragons to its service April 30, which can only puzzle Helen that this, of all titles, is coming to the service so fast.

Weird News

37:39: Because the two hosts can’t escape it: more Interspecies Reviewers news, er, weird news, as the Broadcasting Ethics & Program Improvement Organization’s Youth Committee in Japan is gonna go watch it. Based on some of the comments prior to them watching it, it’s sure to go swell.

38:40: One Piece is now no longer a shounen series — it’s now a shoujo. This is where video game marketing and manga collide!
