0:00: With much to talk about following the month break, Helen and Justin get right into the news of January essentially, which starts with the earthquake that happened in Japan to start the year, and this very much affected a number of things, including the Go Nagai Museum that burned down.

3:00: The verdict has been handed down for the suspect in the Kyoto Animation arson case

4:25: Futabasha’s Monthly Action Magazine will end publication, leaving a number of series waiting on where they’ll be moved until the last issue is out.

5:38: Both Land of the Lustrous and Heart Gear creators have or will be off of hiatus from their series, while Beet the Vandel Buster will go on hiatus once again.

6:53: Wagakki announced they will go on hiatus at the end of this year; Butareba will air its final episode February 5.

8:08: Boy and the Heron is now the fourth highest-grossing anime film in the US, which means everything has come up Miyazaki despite how this film has been marketed.

9:39: Justin and Helen discuss what happened to Ten Count, which had its anime production now cancelled after years of delays.

11:44: Voice actor Kotaro Nakamura will go hiatus due to ill health; singer Akira Kushida was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and has since been hospitalized.

12:51: Animator and manga creator Haruo Takahashi passed away at age 76 back January 12; Enka singer Aki Yashiro passed away at 73 December 30 due to a type of collagen disease; and Tarou Nami, whose real name is Shigeyuki Chiba, passed away at 79.

Streaming News

38:01: Studio Ponoc’s The Imaginary will stream on Netflix, since they’ve now acquired the global rights for it; meanwhile, the upcoming Demon Slayer anime season will have a special showing in many countries soon.

38:58: Justin had no choice but to talk about Crunchyroll now streaming Manyu Scroll, aka Manyuu Hikenchou, since it was one of his first seasonal anime he watched back in 2011.

40:45: The Pokémon app will be ending service in March, so anyone who wants to watch Pokémon on there, you have your time limit!

Winter Anime 2024 First Impressions

41:36: Justin and Helen discuss what they’ve been watching so far this season, which is not quite as much for Justin, and this time Helen doesn’t have Turn A Gundam to distract her this season. Some new works they’re both intrigued with so far: 7th Time Loop (46:06), Doctor Elise (54:31), Tis’ Time for Torture Princess (1:12:25), Delicious in Dungeon (1:14:46). But at least for one person, they’re watching too much. (That person is Justin).

Weird News

1:30:05: How can one tweet convey so much information that’s equal parts exciting and sad at the same time? By having a global launch AND a shutdown notice in one!…The internet was (not surprisingly) stunned at what happened with Love Live.

1:32:41: Kizumonogatari: Koyomi Vamp made sure to stand out from its peers by having an 8-minute TV advertisement, which apparently is the longest Japanese TV ad ever according to the staff.

1:34:10: Yor and Chun-li found a way to meet somehow outside of their own universes! Yes, we had a Street Fighter 6 and Spy x Family collaboration, which meant them somehow fighting each other and in-game costumes.
