Show Notes

0:00: With Anime Expo and Spring anime season to discuss, Justin and Helen get right into the news of the past few weeks, with maybe the conclusion of Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka getting his sentence after he was found guilty of insider trading and the passing of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor creator Hitoshi Yoshioka.

Licenses

  • Blue Comet SPT Layzner TV anime and OVA

  • Aim for the Ace! 2 OVA
  • The Wonderful World of Puss ‘n Boots anime film

4:53: New publisher Monogatari Novels announced they’ve licensed Okemaru & Sabamizore’s The Dreaming Boy is a Realist! and Qiang Tang’s danmei manhua The Silent Concubine.

Anime Expo thoughts from afar and the licenses

6:11: Justin and Helen give their brief thoughts overall on Anime Expo despite not actually being there, helped out by news that broke online and a few events outside of the convention that aren’t anime-related.

10:05: Yen Press had a number of announcements, likely headlined by them getting the novel and comic version of singNsong’s Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint. They’re also producing a few more audiobooks of their novels.

14:27: DENPA had a few announcements at their panel, three of them going to KUMA, which means more BL being in print format.

14:55: Square Enix announced a mix of titles at their panel, from Final Fantasy to a cookbook to more manga, all planned mostly for 2024.

15:59: J-Novel Club ended up doing what Justin has demanded since the Slayers audiobook was announced: an audiobook of Ascendance of a Bookworm! They also shocked him at the same time by announcing they licensed This Art Club Is a Problem amongst their 14 title announcements.

19:32: Kodansha made 26 announcements at their panel, and in addition to some licenses, we’ll see a few familiar faces in a brand-new version.

22:38: Mangamo announced just two titles, though we already know Yamada-kun at Lv999 will be getting a print release next year.

24:01: Animate will release three new titles digitally, but one of their biggest announcements is Toworu Miyata’s Living With Him will be released in print.

24:42: UDON made 4 announcements, all of various levels of quality. Probably!

25:20: Crunchyroll had a couple announcements but it’s pretty likely the major announcement that shocked everyone was the return of a new season of Black Butler.

27:21: Netflix will stream Delicious in Dungeon in January; Undead Unluck will stream on Hulu; and yes, Warner Bros and WIT are teaming up to produce a Suicide Squad isekai, for better or worse!

29:13: For whatever reason, it was revealed at the panel that there will be an anime of Yoshitaka Amano’s ZAN, but it’s not going to be released until 2026 or later. Justin wonders why they would reveal this now…

Streaming News

31:16: The joke of having to watch Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai with a library account is over, since now you can watch the English dub of that, Digimon Adventure, and Dragon Ball Z: Kai on Hulu.

31:39: Yuri Sci-Fi Volicia of Pluto -Vapor Trail Another Age 2006- is streaming on YouTube (with English subs) until August 31,

31:55: Me & Roboco is now streaming on Crunchyroll.

32:07: Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is now streaming on Crunchyroll.

32:14: And finally, Justin just couldn’t help but note Crunchyroll sneaking they will stream Rurouni Kenshin without actually announcing it and how it definitely reminded him of how they handled Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 and the marketing they did for it.

Main Topic: Final Spring Anime Season thoughts

36:45: The two hosts attempt to explain what they liked, what they were lukewarm of, and what they still need to finish for the Spring anime 2023 season. Some favorites were the major ones ([Oshi no Ko], Witch From Mercury Part 2) and some surprises (Too Cute Crisis, Skip & Loafer). Justin also takes some time to call out The Reason Why Raeliana Ended Up at The Duke’s Mansion, and not necessarily because it was bad (48:15).

Weird News

1:33:51: Yor and Chun-Li about to face off is not the crossover the hosts could’ve saw coming, but it’s likely one they will embrace.

1:34:45: You get popular enough as an anime series, you get to collaborate with one of the biggest sports league ever. See: My Hero Academia and the NBA.
