34:25: TOKYOPOP, for all of their mistakes as they’ve come back into publishing, has done ok, and they had some nice license announcements at their panel. But they’re now aiming to ruin it by reviving Rising Stars of Manga. Justin and Helen go over this decision by them.

38:23: DENPA licensed Fish Society; Mangamo had a couple announcements and manga to add to their app; Turning the Tables on the Seatmate Killer & My Dear Detective: Mitsuko’s Case Files will be added to Azuki in August; and finally, Comikey will be working with Digital Manga, Shueisha, and ABLAZE to add a good amount of stuff to their service.

41:29: Crunchyroll had two announcements that hyped some fansSolo Leveling and Tomo-chan is a Girl! Some interesting information can be gleamed regarding both these two titles. Also they’re now streaming Fate/Grand Carnival!

MACROSS!

44:26: Helen digs into the enormous amount of Macross news that occurred on Friday and Saturday at Anime Expo:

  • Anime Limited has licensed Macross Plus.
  • AnimEigo has licensed The Super Dimension Fortress Macross II: Lovers, Again
  • Udon Entertainment will publish Hidetaka Tenjin’s Artistry of Macross: From Flash Back 2012 to Macross Frontier artbook
  • Nozomi has licensed Macross Frontier and Macross Delta
  • Rightstuf/Nozomi has licensed Macross 7, and will be released in two Blu-Ray Disc sets, with both a regular edition and a “collector’s ultra edition” release with bonus content

50:55: Rightstuf/Nozomi also announced they’ll be bringing over three Gundam works to home media sometime soon; Sentai licensed Peter Grill Season 2, Chiikawa, Ragna Crimson, Reincarnated as a Sword, & I’ve Somehow Gotten Stronger When I Improved My Farm-Related Skills; Eleven Arts will show The House of the Lost on the Cape film in theaters on September 7 with sub and dub showings.

52:53: And in final bit of big news at Anime Expo, Trigger announced at their panel that they’ll be doing an anime project involving Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, and the internet lost their minds; to get people hyped, Dark Horse confirmed they’ll be reprinting the manga.

56:06: But to cap this section off, Justin and Helen discuss an alternative universe where the manga licensing cards lined up for Dark Horse and in addition to having Berserk in their catalog they’re currently publishing Attack on Titan and Rose of Versailles. In reality though the two hosts get to at least theorize why Dark Horse doesn’t have those two, since it was revealed how.

Streaming News

1:01:15: The new Reincarnated as a Slime movie will screen on Crunchyroll early in 2023; they’ve also added a couple new Gundam works to their service. Meanwhile the newest Gundam, Witch From Mercury Prologue, will premiere at SDCC…which only puzzles Justin and Helen. And in final bit of streaming news, also consider this weird: Vinland Saga is out on Netflix and HIDIVE…with two different dubs. Welp!

Main Topic: Summer Anime 2022 Part 1: First Impressions

1:03:05: With all the Anime Expo news and other news that happened over the past few weeks, Justin and Helen talk about a few of the summer anime they’ve watched so far, ranging from Ayumu to Call of the Night to what someone is possibly stalling to watch (Biscuit Hammer), though expect more anime to be discussed in the next episode!

Weird News

1:33:40: The story of former Prime Minister Abe getting assassinated did end up affecting the industry, just in some ways you’d expect, others not so much:

  • Teppen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’s second episode got cancelled due to its plotline.
  • BELLE, but less cancelled and more halted due to coverage of Abe’s assassination.
  • And then you get the comments from someone saying something stupid, and that left Hideo Kojima to put out a statement. Incredible.

1:37:14: Oh hey look, the Love Hina and Negima! guy got a seat in the Japan House of Representatives!

1:37:54: Meanwhile 2chan website founder Hiroyuki Nishimura is now an isekai hero, and both hosts have no words on how weird this actually is (ok, they have a few!)

1:38:58: A manga getting cancelled due to the artist’s health is not unusual, but for 86 to have two series where both the artists had health issues and had to cancel it is definitely rare for sure. Unfortunate news.

1:40:40: Mob Psycho Season 3 has people hyped about it. Maybe too hype, as someone leaked the new OP from the AX panel and that made the official Twitter account sad.

1:41:47: Transformers has been existing for a long time, but finally, they’ve now become anime girls.

1:42:20: VTubing and Nice Boat shouldn’t mix, but when bringing the School Days band back together, it…will have to mix!

1:43:27: And in final bit of weird news, Netflix apparently has not learned from their last failure of Death Note and will try again! Justin has…lots of thoughts about it, especially since he’s a big fan of the series!!!
