Show Notes

0:00: Helen and Justin end up talking about what they’ve been up to over the past few weeks. One of them has been stuck in the isekai chamber while the other ended up using Udon’s Rose of Versailles book for something deadly…and also started reading Marielle Clarac…the light novel!

15:41: Anime Central has come and gone, but a few weeks ago the convention made a decision that baffled both Justin and Helen involving changing their COVID-19 policies the week of the convention. No matter where you fall on how cons should handle this, both hosts can’t imagine changing everything when the con is going to start that week.

On a related note as to how bad this decision was, the con later clarified their policies.

28:40: Seven Seas did their…”usual” Wonderful Wednesdays announcements where Justin has long wondered if this would ever end:

  • Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (MXTX) & Luo Di Cheng Qiu’s manhua/comic series Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi; this is also the one with 3 translators apparently working on this, and there was…drama involving this.
  • ITKZ’s The Titan’s Bride (BL)

The last 6 titles will be classified under their new Seven Seas GL and BL label, but both hosts wonder if it’s really necessary when they already have so many lines.

Also CR will stream Chainsaw Man this fall, putting to bed any thoughts about it being on any other service.

40:45: Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens will stream on Hulu and air on Disney XD in June; and Adult Swim is producing a Rick and Morty & Ninja Kamui anime.

Main Topic: Seven Seas Staff Forms a Union

41:56: In what would be a first in the manga industry, 70% of Seven Seas workers (32 out of 41) have formed a United Workers of Seven Seas. In forming a union they’re trying to change — and based on what they’ve outlined — what is a very poor working environment, though so far Seven Seas hasn’t voluntary recognized the union and hired a notable union-busting company (this last one happening a few days after Justin and Helen discussed this) — this after pulling a Mushoku Tensei & I’m in Love with the Villainess by giving their statements to outlets and not actually saying anything themselves.

Justin and Helen discuss the significance of this move, how going from Macmillan to Penguin Random House a few years ago has fueled this situation, and how this could impact the industry if this succeeds. Also this makes the two hosts reflect even more on some of Seven Seas’ notable mistakes, which does range from the incidents discussed before, but even smaller ones such as crediting the wrong translator.

Weird News

1:03:59: Creators have or are returning! A suspicious looking Twitter account popped up that turned out to be Yoshihiro Togashi teasing the return of Hunter x Hunter, and thanks to one popular artist verifying the account, he now (it’s possible it’s passed him already) has the second most followers on Twitter behind Kohei Horikoshi; meanwhile Land of the Lustrous is also returning soon, though this was the hosts’ unique opportunity to reference Ichikawa and her PS5.

1:07:06: J.J. Abrams, Apple, and Speed Racer? Welp, it’s happening!

1:07:50: NFTs appear to be dying out somewhat in the US, but it’s not quite happening just yet elsewhere — see the Kindachi Case Files proving this to be correct!

1:09:40: You can now buy the outfits from Birdie Wing, thanks to a partnership with golf apparel brand Jack Bunny!!.

1:10:10: A One Piece gym being created is notable enough, it’s just that the spelling for one part of it is hard to unsee…

1:11:16: One Power Ranger is apparently part of a COVID-19 loan fraud with 17 other people. How can you let this happen, Red Ranger?

1:12:56: And well, the legendary Yosuga no Sora had a marathon on Kiss Day a few weeks ago! That for sure would land in this section!
