Pandemic News

0:00: With much to talk about in this episode Justin and Helen skip the preamble and dive right into things, beginning with COVID-19, and well, how it’s not going so great in Japan. (This episode was recorded this past Sunday as a heads up!) Olympics are happening, delays are happening, it’s all happening.

News

6:42: Justin and Helen talk about the explosive growth of manga this year — so explosive that lots of titles are out of stock and some are going to take a while to be reprinted. Companies and retailers talked to ICv2 and explained what it’s been like as people buy manga, and how their processes have changed as it’s not just COVID-19 impacting stock — other things have contributed to the delays and titles being out of stock.

16:56: MAPPA had to comment after an animator took to Twitter and explained they were paying very low rates, and denied it.

20:36: Jujutsu Kaisen will resume August 2 after Akutami took a break for health reasons; The artist for The Misfit of Demon Academy, Kayaharuka, passed away likely due to pancreatic cancer; and voice actress Philece Sampler passed away at 67 due to a heart attack.

Licenses

22:17: Just when you thought we were done talking about digital manga services, two more pop up! Krystallina sure is having a time writing about them. But the two hosts talk about Alpha Manga, which is run by JP AlphaPolis, and Comikey, which has a mix of comics and are now adding manga to their service. Justin and Helen talk about these new services and why they’re emerging now.

Main Topic: Summer Anime Season 2021

48:03: The two hosts talk immediately about how barren the summer season is this year, then launch right into what they’re watching, from the sequels (Higurashi: SOTSU, Reincarnated as a Slime S2, Bakarina X, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S2) to a new edition of a franchise that’s going to have a weird streaming schedule (Love Live! Superstar!!) to some new stuff (How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom, Sonny Boy, Kageki Shojo) to even stuff they couldn’t talk about since they haven’t aired as of recording (Idaten Deities, The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!, Magia Record S2). Along the way Justin gets into an explanation as to why Tokyo Revengers is unlikely to see a print release from Kodansha (1:35:30), which is tough for them since they’re missing out on a lot of money right now.

Weird News

1:39:14: The two hosts definitely had to talk about the mystifying situation with Anime Tube (Which Krystallina basically summed up), from their past, Shawne Kleckner going on the attack, and wonder how Anime Tube could’ve succeeded when they don’t seem to know anyone in the industry.

1:41:57: Pony Canyon was not going to release a BD box-set of Odd Taxi in Japan, but they changed their tune…slightly!

1:42:57: Someone decided it was time to create a plushie of Rena’s hatchet from Higurashi. Justin wonders why.

1:44:00: Tite Kubo decided to cross Bleach over with Loki! Well in particular, Aizen with Loki and it looks great, just Helen wonders what kind of marketing this is.
