Pandemic News

0:00: Justin and Helen immediately explain why the podcast got delayed an extra week (coughwinteranimeseasoncough) then get into news involving the pandemic; while vaccines are rolling out around the world there are still issues that have forced cancellations and events being rescheduled at curious times. Meanwhile one event went on that forced vaccine cancellations!

News

4:19: While on the surface this isn’t quite manga related, for comic book news this is huge: Marvel is moving away from Diamond distribution and joining Penguin Random House.

6:43: After the reveal of what was altered in Mushoku Tensei and the cuts in Classroom of the Elite, a 3rd Seven Seas title — I’m in Love with the Villainess — was found to have had something similar happen to that title. Now Justin and Helen have to think that prior LNs they’ve released have been adjusted in this manner, which isn’t what you’d want to know when reading a Seven Seas LN.

29:01: J-Novel Club, a day before their Twitch stream where they announced their new titles, did a great April Fools Day work where you have to give that a read, as it hinted what they’d be announcing…but you’d have to really think about what it could be!

39:33: Crunchyroll is now streaming Marudase Kintarō; Netflix meanwhile will be streaming Pui Pui Molcar.

Weird News

40:41: Nine men were arrested for illegal fishing March 8, which feels weird to bring up in this section, except the boat they were using was called “Going Merry”…not at ALL a reference to a mega-popular Shonen Jump title, not at all!

42:11: The hosts use words like Chilean Hokage and seeing Naruto run, which is probably enough to let you know what’s going on in this section.

43:25: But in final weird news of this podcast, we have a major contender for weird news of 2021:

  • Timeline: It was noted when GoHands released character design materials for Tokyo Babylon 2021 that it looked awfully similar to an idol from Red Velvet and a Volks Doll
  • Then in December, GoHands fessed up that due to verification on materials and copyright awareness wasn’t performed sufficiently, and that “declining compliance work led to it overlooking the improperly referenced designs”, they had to delay the anime from a planned Spring 2021 release
  • And now, GoHands won’t be doing this anime anymore because after an investigation, the production committee uncovered more plagiarism, and subsequently lost faith in the animation studio

Justin and Helen not just discuss the future of this anime and when it’ll be ready, but how bad this basically is for GoHands.

Winter Anime 2021 Final Season Thoughts

52:00: The two hosts discuss just how strange this anime season was; due to COVID-19 there was not only titles that were pushed back to this season, but now studios were operating under COVID-19 protocols. There was the highs of a lot of great anime that aired in this season, but lows where recaps and material delays were an issue. Wonder Egg Priority, SK8 the Infinity, and S2 of The Promised Neverland ran into these issues.

59:08: Cloverworks in particular had issues with their titles and how they were adapted, which gets Justin to discuss how The Promised Neverland was handled from when it was first greenlit to get a S2, and how ultimately, for a top selling Shonen Jump title to be told that it had to wrap in this last season, there’s something really wrong with that.

1:13:48: The “Final” season of Attack on Titan, while not of the same scale as the others as publicly, didn’t quite have the normal schedule either; it was moved from WIT Studio to MAPPA last year, and it aired in December. It also will not actually end (the anime at least) as it’ll be back this upcoming Winter.

1:17:44: The two hosts then discuss in this section the Winter Anime they’ve watched. Here’s a list of all the anime they each watched, though note that because of the number of sequels that aired this season and Fall shows that ended, Justin saw a lot of anime. You’ll have to listen to find out what he watched (this doesn’t even include his Fall and Winter continuations), but you can probably guess what he did see:

Black Clover, Anime Kapibarasan, With a Dog and Cat, Every Day is Fun, Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki S3, Jujutsu Kaisen, Higurashi: When they Cry – Gou, Yasha-hime, Re:Zero S2 Part S2, Laid-Back Camp S2, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime S2 Part 1, Attack on Titan Final Season, Dr. Stone: Stone Wars, Uma Musume S2, Cells at Work!! and Cells at Work: CODE BLACK, The Quintessential Quintuplets S2, Kemono Jihen, Horimiya, Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki, High-Rise Invasion, Thus Spoke Rohan Kishibe, Otherside Picnic, 2:43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team, Heaven’s Design Team, Mushoku Tensei, Log Horizon 3, Hortensia Saga, Sk8 the Infinity.
