The OASG Podcast

Show Notes

0:00: Justin and Helen once again chat about what they’ve been up to, which, for Justin, gets into the Comic-Con@Home experience (both watching it and…taking part in it). Meanwhile Helen talks about liking March Comes In like a Lion a lot.

Pandemic News

10:19: Just when things seemed in control in Japan, maybe not so much, as cases have been rising in Japan, with a few actors testing positive and one event causing 59 people there to get it. Justin and Helen discuss this news, and talk about a couple more delays (Skate-Leading Stars from this summer to January 2021) to returns (Gal & Dino restarting back in October!)

The two also start to discuss the real possibility of every anime convention this year being cancelled. Basically, NYCC, ANYC…they may have to worry.

News

20:27: ICYMI, Amazon removed some manga and light novel titles, and in particular, J-Novel Club fairly hard, over the past couple weeks. The two discuss what this all means (including how those titles were removed and the 18+ stuff still on Amazon) and how publishers have responded.

26:41: Adult Swim & Crunchyroll Originals is teaming up to do a Xena: Warrior Princess Fena: Pirate Princess collab!

Justin and Helen have some concerns.

29:49: Justin almost fell out his when he saw a trailer for G4…possibly coming back? This only makes him wonder how it’s coming back and if a version of Anime Unleashed will come back too!

32:23: The Eisners happened at Comic-Con@Home! The two talk about Way of the Househusband, Cats of the Louvre, and Witch Hat Atelier winning awards, and also talk even more about what transpired when Justin let Helen known Witch Hat Atelier tied with Cats of the Louvre on Twitter.

Licenses

37:58: Yen Press announced a few weeks ago they’ll be bringing over the 86-EIGHTY-SIX manga and will release Kingdom Hearts III in volume format; Star Fruit Books will release a one shot called Sawanabe Zombie in October; Manga Planet announced 5 titles at Momiji’s Online Experience:

  • Hiroshi Motomiya’s Salary Man Kintaro (August 3)
  • Akira Miyashita’s Charge!! Men’s School (August 4)
  • Makoto Ogino’s Peacock King (August 5)
  • Yoshihiro Takahashi’s Silver Fang — The Shooting Star Gin (August 6)
  • Tatsuya Egawa’s Magical ★ Taruruto (August 7)

futekiya announced the following 5 titles at Momiji’s Online Experience:

  • Konoko Kino’s I Love You So Do As I Say (August 3)
  • Funa’s I Want You So Much That I’ll Let Him Violate Me (August 4)
  • Shuma’s Mirage (August 5) & Touch of a Brush (August 6)
  • Sato Fuyumi’s The Time a Gangster was Reincarnated as Ranmaru Mori — Darn it, Nobunaga! So, You Plan on Making Me Your Page!? — (August 7)

45:00: Of course, we all knew Kodansha Comics licensed Shaman King as a ComiXology Originals title. But since they did have a panel at Comic-Con@Home, what could they announce regarding this franchise next?

Well, even announcing this at the virtual con was a struggle:

  • Somehow either Comic-Con or Kodansha Comics mixed up the panels — The Weird Manga panel (for Saturday) got switched to Thursday, so instead of Shaman King, that aired instead.
  • After it took about 40-50 minutes for the proper video to go up, it got blocked by King Records because Kodansha included the Shaman King 2021 anime trailer.
  • By the time it was properly up (somewhere between 8-9PM), the news of what they were announcing was already on Twitter and likely elsewhere.

So what is the news regarding Shaman King?

  • Hiroyuki Takei’s Shaman King will come out in print with revised translation & lettering; as 3-in-1 omnibus editions (Both Volumes 1 & 2 released simultaneously in Spring 2021); 11 volumes slated to be released between 2021/2022
  • A bunch of Shaman King digital titles:
    • Hiroyuki Takei & Jet Kusamura’s Shaman King: Red Crimson
    • Shaman King: Super Star
    • Shaman King: Flowers
    • Shaman King: Zero

The two get into finally discussing the big things happening to Shaman King…but when Justin and Helen next talk, they will also have to get into Kodansha delaying it the day before it was supposed to drop July 28! Kodansha probably has a lot to review regarding all of this.

52:21: Kodansha Comics also released their September schedule, in which they have new titles:

  • Fuse & Shizuku Akechi’s That Time I Got Reincarnated (Again!) as a Workaholic Slime (once planned for July 28)
  • Haru Tsukishima’s We Must Never Fall in Love! (once planned for August 4…hey, formerly days where the Shaman King manga were dropping!)
  • Fuyu Amakura’s Heroine for Hire
  • Mari Yoshino’s Maid in Honey
  • Souko Masaki’s My Best (♀) Butler

This part manages to also have the two hosts call into question Kodansha’s digital inconsistencies.

55:09: Two new titles have been added to Shonen Jump and MANGA Plus: Kaiju No. 8 & Ghost Reaper Girl, from the creator of Rosario + Vampire.

55:40: Nihonbugeisha’s Manga Goraku Special magazine is now digital only. This manages to bring Honda-san into this conversation.

Streaming News

57:25: Netflix will add the latest season of The Seven Deadly Sins and Great Pretender in August; meanwhile, HBO Max will add a couple known shows such as The Promised Neverland and Madoka Magica August 4.

Weird News

58:13: Buff Shinji Ikari is a thing, and you all need to see it.

59:03: The studio that worked on I’m Standing On A Million Lives is posting all 293 cuts of the first episode on social media. Obviously done for marketing purposes, but Justin wonders why…

1:00:42: The Princess Connect staff had to apologize because there’s a part in their game where it’s clearly plagiarized…not what you want.

1:01:19: Finally, Haikyu!! had one of the coolest stories of the year involving a character and an actual pro team, and you need to listen to Helen tell you about it.
