The amount of shounen manga that’s published year in and year out in the US is pretty high, and as it manages to resonate with a number of readers and genders, it ultimately means there will always be good titles to read. There will also be bad ones, and this brand new column (which may or may not have something to do with the big three) will also cover those manga as best we can.
But actual critique from TheOASG staff on what shounen’s being annoyingly poor is not happening just yet. Instead, for the next few Sundays you’ll get an overview of what shounen titles have been licensed by publishers and is still in print.
To reiterate as a general rule: this will more than likely not have every single title. You can only go so far using Baka-Updates, Wikipedia, and ANN. That said, I’m open to adding manga to the list if I missed one, just share what you want added. Also, if there are any corrections that need to be made (particularly if some links don’t work), feel free to let me know!
Now, onto this post’s rules:
This is a listing of every published manga in the US that you can actually purchase today that’s in or has been in the Big Three line (Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday, Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine), with info, genre, and where to read or buy it.
So i.e, if you don’t see something like Strawberry 100%, GTO, or Beet: The Vandal Buster on this list for example, there’s a reason they’re not on it. Also no Jump Starts.
We’re using the Japanese magazines as a guide. Therefore, the only highlight you’ll get of One Punch Man, published in a seinen magazine, is the link there. But to reassure you, Seraph of The End and Blue Exorcist will be in next week’s listing, where all of the shounen US manga companies have licensed and aren’t a part of the big three are on it.

Your Favorite Shounen From the Big Three
In the comments below, please feel free to share which is your favorite manga you’ve enjoyed out of the big three. You can choose one manga out of the big three or three from each magazine. You can explain why, but be brief if possible. You can break this rule if you wish since there are a lot of great titles published here.
Here’s some of TheOASG’s staff on our favorite shounen titles and why:
Alcina: Jump — It’s a tossup between Kuroko’s Basketball and Haikyu!!, but I would have to choose Kuroko. I really loved the anime. It made me feel excited about basketball for the first time, and I ended up picking up this manga when it was brought over.
Sunday — Case Closed is a long-time favourite of mine, and contains some of my favourite detective – and phantom thief – characters. I actually started reading this in Chinese a long time ago, currently reading the English release when I can. Considering its length, it is daunting, but the core cast are all lovable and genuinely interesting.
Justin: This is a difficult decision since there are a ton of favorites, but I’m gonna choose one that manages to combine humor, action, and historical inaccuracy just because aliens are involved: Gintama. Very first time I heard of it didn’t seem all that appealing to me, until I read a preview chapter in my school’s anime club in the print edition of US WSJ years ago. I could not recall a work that made me tear up and laugh so brazenly in public like Gintama, and throughout all 23 volumes published here, all managed to be one hell of a trip, sometimes humorously and seriously. Miss being able to collect them all in English, but will just have to suffice with the anime for now I hope.
Krystallina: Jump —Rurouni Kenshin – Part of me loves Kenshin because it helped hook me into anime, but I think the series still stands out for featuring an older, strong protagonist who isn’t emo.Sunday — Cross Game – Although a good part of me says the anime is better, I love Cross Game because it’s deceptively simple. Part sports, part romance, all emotion.
Magazine — Negima! – I almost don’t want to choose it since I despise the non-ending and I’m not really feeling the sequel, but man, Akamatsu brilliantly shifted from “Harem Potter” to an epic adventure. Plus the art is amazing.
